PST is an Outlook database that stores all the offline copies of your email messages, contacts, appointments, tasks, journal entries, notes, RSS feeds, settings, E-mail accounts, message rules, junk e-mail lists and signatures. When the items are recorded in the database there is an index that points to each item. When you delete an email or any other item in the outlook, it doesn’t actually delete the items; it just deletes the items listings from the index. The email is still in the PST file but not accessible because Outlook has no idea where it is without the pointer in the index.
When you delete an email in Outlook it really isn’t deleted; it’s only marked for deletion. It’s only until you compact your PST file that your email is permanently erased, and the empty space is reclaimed. Once the PST has 20% empty space, Outlook begins compacting the PST automatically.
